More Than Coffee: Building Culture at Aston Villa
Last year, we were invited down to Aston Villa’s training ground with a clear brief: upgrade their coffee setup.
On the surface, that meant sourcing and installing a high-quality coffee machine, and training both staff and players to use it. Moving away from a push-button system to something more hands-on, more intentional, and ultimately — better.
But for us, it was never just about the coffee.
Understanding the Environment
Before coffee, before Maison Dieu, we come from football.
We understand how changing rooms operate. The rhythms of a training day. The small, often overlooked moments that shape team dynamics — arriving early, winding down after training, informal conversations between players and staff.
Those moments matter more than people think.
And coffee, when done properly, can play a surprisingly important role in them.
Changing Habits, Shaping Culture
Previously, players would often grab coffee on the way into training. Quick, convenient, and gone.
By bringing high-quality coffee into the training ground itself, that behaviour shifts.
Players start arriving earlier.
They spend more time in the building — not because they have to, but because they want to. Coffee becomes a reason to be there, to slow down, to connect.
You start to see more crossover between staff and players. More natural interaction. More shared moments that build trust and familiarity.
And after training, instead of heading straight off, players stick around. Another coffee. Another conversation.
It’s subtle. But it’s powerful.
Why It Works
Coffee isn’t just a product — it’s a catalyst.
When it’s done well, it creates spaces where people naturally come together. No agenda, no structure — just time spent in the same place.
In elite sport, where marginal gains are everything, those small cultural shifts can have a real impact.
Stronger relationships. Better communication. A more connected environment.
The Results?
We’ll let others judge that.
Aston Villa have had an exceptional year — on and off the pitch.
And while we’d never claim that coffee is the reason for that success…
…it would be fair to say it’s played its part in shaping the environment behind it.
More Than Just Installation
What we delivered wasn’t just a machine.
It was:
-
The right equipment for a high-performance environment
-
High-quality, specialty-grade coffee
-
Hands-on training for staff and players
-
Ongoing support to make sure standards stay high
Because if you’re going to do it, you do it properly.
Final Thoughts
At Maison Dieu, we believe coffee can do more than just wake people up.
It can bring people together.
It can change habits.
It can quietly shape culture.
And sometimes, those are the changes that matter most.
