What does it take to bring exceptional coffee to a town that’s never known it? For Maison Dieu, it was a journey of courage, perseverance, and a commitment to community. Here’s how two dreamers turned their love for coffee into a thriving local staple.
2020
Our story started in 2020 when founders Euan Spark and John Souttar recognised the lack of speciality coffee options in Angus. With no experience in business, they started their journey with just a passion for coffee and hours of research and investments. They invested in their dream and honed their skills in roasting, cupping, and barista techniques at The Scottish Barista Academy in Livingston. It was the beginning of something special.
2021
Over a year later, we opened our doors at the Old Sonoco Building on Montrose Street as Brechins first ever speciality coffee roaster. Bringing ethically sourced, exceptional coffee to the local community, those early days were filled with hope – hope that people would find their way to the takeaway window. To the founders’ delight, the community showed up in droves, embracing this new coffee culture. From that moment, our mission was clear: to give back to our community and put Brechin on the map for exceptional coffee.
2022
Word quickly spread about our coffee, and soon, Maison Dieu was found in multiple local cafes across Angus. It was then we realised that our coffee deserved a wider audience. This is when we decided that our coffee should be sold all over, setting up our online store to offer our coffee, brew kits, merchandise and subscriptions to everyone. Further, we gave back to our community by hosting events at our shop and starting up our horse box, gaining the opportunity to attend various events all over the country.
2023
2023 was a year of celebration and growth. We were thrilled to receive our first award at a Showcase evening hosted by the Courier Business Awards. This achievement reinforced our loyalty to our Maison Dieu Coffee community. We did not slow down after this and made a huge leap to start up our second café in Broughty Ferry, introducing speciality coffee to the town. Fostering a new community through the love of our coffee was a milestone for us, allowing us to do what we love best: giving people good coffee!
2024
With the new café, horse box, online shop, and growing our wholesale customers, the business has grown tremendously in only three years! This is all down to the loyalty of our customers, which we cannot thank enough. As a way to give back to the community, we started our own events in the Broughty Ferry Café, showcasing local artists work, coffee tasting evenings, and barista masterclasses.
2025
Three years on, Maison Dieu is now a community, a movement, and a result of what passion and perseverance can achieve. As we look to the future, we are excited to see what the future holds for Maison Dieu as we show no signs of slowing down.
We are not just about coffee; we believe in the growth that stems from the foundation of connection, community, and creating memories through our flavourful coffee. From humble beginnings to becoming a cherished name in Angus, our journey is a reflection of tenacity, dreams, and dedication. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to bringing people together, one cup of coffee at a time. Whether you’re visiting our cafés, ordering online, or tasting our brews at a local event, you’re becoming a part of our story.
