Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters - First Crack

Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters - First Crack

As 2021 comes to a close, we would like to take some time to look back on a busy year for us at Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters.

We may have only been open for just over a month now, but our journey began long ago when a passion and love for coffee became a reality.

Back in June 2020 the idea came to light of opening a coffee roaster in our hometown Brechin. Along the way there was to be many hurdles to overcome.

Firstly, we had to take our love of coffee in for some training. We first began our roasting training at The Scottish Barista Academy under the watchful eye of Jim Watson down in Livingston. We spent many a weekend down there learning the true science, art and techniques of roasting, cupping, barista training and many more skills that would become vital to us opening today.

From there we needed to find a premises. Leaving Brechin along the Montrose Road we found the perfect place. The Old Sonoco Building was divided into sections to bring the fantastic building back to life and with that we found the home of Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters. After many months of refurbishments, we finally turned the old canteen and toilet block into our new Roasters. All we needed now was some new toys…

A brand-new state of the art 10kg Toper Roaster was first to arrive from Turkey. Soon after came our Conti espresso machine, our espresso grinder, industrial grinder, and many other toys to complete the coffee roasting set.

With our roaster’s all but ready, now became what we would find the biggest challenge. Every fine detail would need to be looked over. From the roasting side, perfecting each individual bean origin roast, tasting the roast through a process called cupping to then perfecting the correct extraction. Setting up our brand, website, and advertising. We welcomed Abbie and Emma, two local girls to our team who would come into work at weekends and with that we enjoyed our first in house training day with our friends from Drip.

On that note along the way there has been too many people to thank personally for their help to get us to where we are now. From the very start Jim Watson for training us, James at USVTHEM for the training and instalments of our equipment, Jacob and Aimee at Drip for coming up to help train us and many, many more that helped us.

After all this we are now here, a month in and we are overwhelmed by the support of our customers. Its safe to say we never expected to become so busy so soon, selling out of coffee bags last week, cakes nearly every day and to see so many faces return to try more of our speciality coffee. It really is great to see the community coming together and supporting us as a small new business in Brechin, so thank you all so much.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and from everyone at Maison Dieu Coffee Roasters we wish you a very happy New Year,

Euan
